It was revealed today that three clubs have failed to meet the financial requirements of the League and will not feature in the Lega Pro this coming season.
The clubs concerned are Spal, Foggia and Siracusa. For Spal in particular this is a sad day as they have been professional for an unbroken 105 years.
For Foggia too it is a bitter blow. It's not that long ago they were in Serie A under the guidance of new Roma coach Zdenik Zeman. It's not a new experiece for Siracusa however as it is the second time in the last ten years.
It's not clear as yet if any other clubs will follow the three into Serie D or below.
However, in a separate announcement Lega Pro have stated that 77 clubs will take part in the new season - 36 in Lega Pro 1 and 41 in Lega Pro 2. This suggests that there are no other casualties.

The Lega Pro continues to struggle. This season sees a reduction in numbers to 69 clubs, 36 in Lega Pro 1 and 33 in Lega Pro 2.
Three more high profile clubs have fallen by the wayside: Triestina, Taranto and Piacenza. Triestina, longtime Serie A members before and just after WW2, drop to the Eccelenza, Taranto will be in Serie D and Piacenza who were in Serie A in the 1990's, appear to have folded completely.
Of the three bigger clubs mentioned above Spal and Foggia will be in Serie D and Siracusa in the Eccelenza.

Yeah....I remember those days when Piacenza were in Serie A playing the likes on Inter, Juve and Milan.

No doubt a new club will rise again from the ashes. This happens so often in Italian football - remeber Florentia Viola after Fiorentina folded. More recent examples have been Venezia, Salernitana and Cosenza. Eventually they'll buy back the Piacenza name and start to fight their way up from Serie D or the Eccelenza.
Correction to my post of yesterday - Siracusa are also out altogether, not in the Eccelenza as I posted.
